AI safety

Sollund's companion and Help assistant are artificial intelligence (AI): computer programs, not people. This page explains how they tell you that, how long a conversation lasts, and what they do when someone talks about suicide, self-harm or hurting someone. Last updated October 12, 2026.

Need help now?

Call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, any time. In an emergency, call 911.

1. It is AI, and it says so

  • Every Reminisce and Help conversation starts with the AI saying it is Sollund's AI companion or AI helper.
  • If you ask whether it is a person or a computer, it tells you plainly that it is AI.
  • It never claims to be a person, or someone you know.
  • What it says can be wrong, and it is not medical, mental health or legal advice.

2. Conversations are short, so the reminder comes often

Reminisce conversations end after 10 minutes on the free plan and after 15 minutes with Sollund Plus. Help conversations end after 5 minutes. Every new conversation opens with the AI notice again, so while you talk you hear it at least every 15 minutes, far more often than once every 3 hours, which some state laws require.

3. If someone talks about suicide, self-harm or hurting someone

The companion and the Help assistant both listen for talk of wanting to die, not wanting to be alive, hurting oneself, stopping eating on purpose, or hurting someone else, even when it comes up in passing. When they hear it, they:

  • Say that they are a computer and cannot help with this the way a person can.
  • Say that you can call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, any time, and that anyone in danger right now should call 911.
  • Open a card on the screen with buttons to call 988, text 988 and call 911, and a link to 988lifeline.org.
  • Send a safety text to each caregiver in your care circle who turned safety texts on, unless you turned them off. The text says only that someone they care for may need a check-in. Nothing from the conversation is in it.
  • Never describe ways to hurt yourself or anyone else, and never agree that you should.
  • If it comes up again, repeat the 988 and 911 information, open the card again, and suggest calling out to someone nearby.

We test these responses with sample conversations, with safety texts both on and off.

4. Not a crisis or emergency service

Sollund is a companion app. It is not a crisis line, an emergency service, or a medical or mental health service, and nobody at Sollund listens to conversations as they happen. If you are thinking about suicide or self-harm, call or text 988. In an emergency, call 911.

5. What we count

Some states ask companies like ours to report how often this happens each year. Each time the card opens, the app adds one to a count for that calendar year and the kind of statement: suicide, self-harm, not eating, or hurting someone else. The count holds no name, account, conversation or date, so it cannot be traced to anyone. We use it only for those reports.
